Hello aidrummer,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. If we understand correctly, the option to automatically hide and show the menu bar on your computer intermittently doesn't function.

If you haven't done so already, we suggest you try the following troubleshooting steps, testing after each step:

  1. Verify that the Always show toolbar setting isn't enabled for an app that won't hide the toolbar. This can be found in some apps by going to View> disable Always show toolbar in full screen. Customize toolbars.
  2. Toggle the Automatically hide and show the menu bar setting off, restart the computer, and toggle the setting back on. You can do so by opening System Preferences> General> Automatically hide and show the menu bar.
  3. Boot into another user account to test. If you don't have another user account you can create one for testing purposes. Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac.
  4. Start up your Mac in safe mode.
  5. Reinstall or upgrade the OS. If you continue to experience this issue you may want to try reinstalling the OS or consider upgrading if possible. How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery. Always be sure to have a current back up prior to any reinstall or upgrade. How to back up your Mac.

We hope this helps!

Cheers!
