Inserting Right Page Section Throws Off Pagination

I start each chapter on a new section. The first page of the new section will appear on the right side in the book (that's expected) and consequently, has an odd page number. If the previous section had an odd number of pages, Pages inserts a blank filler page to make sure the next section will start on the right hand page of the book (also expected).

For some reason, the filler pages are "skipped" from a page number sequence perspective so the new section starts with an even page number but it is correctly positioned on the right side of the open book.

Any idea why this may be happening? Thanks in advance.

Hi CSleeper,

Tested in Pages 10.0 on macOS Catalina.

You are correct. The only workaround that I can think of is to insert a Page Break at the beginning of each chapter that misbehaves in this way. Leave that task until the very last, when all of your document's content is to your satisfaction. Otherwise, you will be chasing your tail!

Ian.

Thanks. I discovered that workaround, too.

A better one, IMO, is to renumber the affected sections. Instead of selecting Continue from previous section, select Start at and put the number as the last page number from the previous section plus 1. As you note, this should also be done last or you will likely have to redo it if you’ve changed the document to the point the pages automatically renumber.

Still trying to figure out why Pages skips the “filler” page when numbering. I did notice that the filler page is entirely devoid of fields including the header and footer. I expect that the continuous numbering function just looks for the next field you inserted page numbers in. As there is no field on the filler page, it naturally doesn’t increase the page count.
