Apple card vs apple pay for T-Mobile Auto-Pay

I have my monthly T-Mobile bill set up to auto-pay with my Apple Card. I thought that this would get me 3% cash back but it only gives me 1%. Is this correct? I read somewhere where a person was getting 3% on their monthly t-mobile bill. Is this only possible if you go in each month to the store to pay your bill?

Thanks for the clarification. The difference, however, is more significant than that - at my current bill level of $177, it's $1.77 vs $5.31 per month, or $21.24 vs. $63.72... I guess I'd have to decide if it's worth the $3.54/month to go into the store to pay my bill, or just leave it on autopay and not have to think about it. Thanks for your reply!
