In Messages, why are the recipients highlighted in red?

In Messages, why are the recipients highlighted in red? I did not have this problem earlier today. I have restarted my iPhone and MacBook. I am not getting messages. I had to reset my password for AppleID on my Mac. When I went to my phone to put in new password for my Apple ID, I keep getting a verification error. How do I fix this?
