Apple LED Cinema Display noise

Hi there, I've been using the Apple LED Cinema Display for a while now, but lately it started making a lot of noise and blowing out air at random moments. I know the sound is coming from the fan thats cooling the power supply. I actually use the Display as a second screen with my Macbook Air, not as a stand alone unit, so I was wondering whether it's possible to just remove the fan without replacing it, or would this result in overheating of the power supply? This because its just my Macbook Air that's running the whole setup.
