I have tried setting the devices so that all the messages I receive on the iPhone also appear on the Mac, but can't follow the instructions I see. iPhone: XR using iOS 13.7. Mac: using Catalina 10.15.6.

What instructions are you referring to? Are you referring to Handoff -- Use Handoff to continue a task on your other devices - Apple Support? Or are you referring to -- Keep all your messages in iCloud - Apple Support?

Just saying a problem magically vanished is not helpful at all
