I'm going to assume that both your MacBook Pro Late 2011 and MacBook Pro 2020 are connected via Wi-Fi and your trying to do the migration over that.
Instead, plug in your MacBook Pro Late 2011 directly into ethernet (since it has a built-in ethernet port). That will fix 98% of potential problems with the migration transfer versus both Macs being on Wi-Fi.
In terms of that "other" 2% possibilities if this doesn't work, make sure your old MacBook is updated to the latest version of whatever OS X or macOS it was running. I don't mean upgrading it to a newer version of OS X or macOS (but that never hurts), I mean specifically making sure you are running the latest patched release of your current version. For example, let's say your old Mac is running El Capitan 10.11.4, you'd want to update it to the latest El Capitan 10.11.6 before doing the migration. There are a few more obscure possibilities (security software blocking it, etc.) but between these two things I would expect the migration issue to be taken care of most likely.
