MacBook Pro slow performance, finding no Time Machine?

Good evening,

I started searching answers to slow performance with MacBook Pro but an EtreCheck report

says that the machine does not have Time Machine back up. Can you advise next steps to correct and then improve speed performance?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.14

You have a snail like speed 5400 rpm spinning hard drive; on top of that, you only have a minimal 4 GB of RAM. That machine can be upgraded (I did that on mine) with an SSD and more RAM. It will be snappy and responsive. You need to make the decision if you want to spend money on an 8 year old machine. If you do, visit OWC -

They are a recommended vendor for both RAM and hard drives. While you're there, check out the external hard drives for your Time Machine backup, I have 4 of their Mercury Elite Pros (they come in different sizes and flavors - I like the Mini).

The report shows that your check took more than twice as long as it should have. This often indicates your drive is developing Bad Blocks, and may need to be replaced soon. The best replacement is an SSD drive of ≥ 500 GB size. it will be at least ten times faster.

You MacBook Pro 13-in Mid 2012 (not retina) has only 4GB or RAM. You need AT Least 6GB for appropriately-responsive operation. Your model Mac has two slots, and can accept up to an 8GB DIMM in each slot for a total of 16GB.

You need to buy an external drive and connect it to use Time machine. This drive does not need to be at all fast. Best size for trouble-free operation in the long run is at least 2.5 times the size of what needs to be saved. A smaller 'found' drive can be use if it is at least 1.5 times the size of what needs to be saved, but it will be more trouble.
