I was asking a question on Safari and clicked on a couple sites and when I exited Safari I got a message that my phone was compromised and then it prompted me to click a link to clear the virus. Is this legit and I have a virus? Or was that some kind of phishing scam?
Any such message on a web site, or popup from one is a scam. Close the page and ignore.

It's a scam, malicious advertising designed to steal your money.
Close out the window and ignore it.
I would suggest you install an ad blocker.
