progress console

Today Sunday 13 SEP 2020 my MacbookPro started downloading "Progress Console" app, which I did not ask for. (I always want to approve something before I download it. ) What is it and do I need it? Seriously considering deleting it.

Cleaners can be more dangerous than just about anything.

You might have an infection...

The free Malwarebytes may take care of it...

Or...

EtreCheck is a simple little diagnostic tool to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac. It will not display any personal info.

Pastebin is a good place to paste the whole report if you capture the URL while there…

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck. In a Reply before you click post, look for this to add longer texts..

Thanks for reply, but I never get adware on my Mac. Guess there's a first time for everything ???

  1. Should I be checking my applications list for things I didn't download? I just did and Progress Console isn't there.
  2. What do the rest of you think about the free Malwarebytes? I get mixed messages as to whether or not a Mac needs it.

BDAAqua,

There was nothing under System Preferences--View

But when I searched the hard drive in Finder, I found a folder and app named Progress Console. I deleted them and emptied the trash, restarted the computer. Hope that took care of it. (Info said it was located in the applications folder, but it definitely wasn't there.)

And while I have your ear, can you recommend a good Mac cleaner? Apple icon-About this Mac-Storage shows 62 GB (out of 121!) filled with "other". I can see thousands of files consisting of a line of gibberish, then all ending in ^pdefault_20 ( or 40 or 80) _distr.png. I think this is probably junk. Any advice appreciated. Do I need a cleaner.?

Let me know if I should start this as a new question.

Thanks, Nancy

MWB is the least offensive & simplest method to remove adware, you can leave it installed just don't have it constantly running.

One other possibility..

See if you have unknown Profiles.

To remove a configuration profile in macOS:

  1. From the Apple menu, select System Preferences....
  2. From the View menu in System Preferences, select Profiles.Note:
  3. Profiles won't be visible until you have at least one profile installed.
  4. Select the profile you want to remove, and then press the - (minus) button. Click Remove to remove the profile.
