New Workstation Spec: Cores Vs Processor Speed

When selecting a multi core workstation, how can the buyer evaluate number of cores vs individual processor speed? For certain tasks like 3D modeling/rendering I believe the clock speed is key. For multi tasking, as in running multiple apps in tandem, I believe more cores can be better.

I typically edit very high res images in Photoshop, and toggle between 3D apps for modeling/rendering. Misc other apps are typically loaded as I work.

The new Macs offer the same old buyer dilemma: More cores at slower clock speed, or fewer cores with higher speed. I'm guessing that it mostly about individual workflow. The high end Macs are the most powerful and expensive desktop machines yet (as is most hardware). Purchase errors can be costly and long lasting. Anyone who is well informed care to weigh in?

First, most of the work in 3D modeling os done on the Graphics processor, which can be compared to the old school "array transform processor".

For almost every other problem, faster CPU clock wins the battle. Taking a single-threaded problem and turning it automatically into a multi-threaded solution is a classic unsolved problem in Computer science. To get a really strong boost requires manually breaking into multiple tasks and hand-tuning to the number of cores available.

In general "More than a handful (of processors) is wasted". In general only special-purpose Apps like Compressor, (when properly tuned to the number of compute cores available) can strongly benefit from more cores.

The reason we are offered more cores is that CPU development has hit a wall. The only way to make it go faster is to go wider, as in more processor cores. This is not a solution anyone has asked for, it is simply the only known way forward.
