CarPlay group text message issues

I have an iPhone 11 Pro and I've noticed that after I connect to my 2019 BMW 330i, and I try to send a text to 2 people in CarPlay, the automatic first response is "Sorry, there was a problem with the app". After that, I can send a text to those same 2 people but subsequent group texts to different people always results in the same error message on first attempt. It's a real pain because you know that your first text attempt will always fail and you have to do it twice. Does not happen when texting to a single person.

Anyone else experiencing this?

iPhone 11 Pro, iOS 13

To start, please complete these steps: If you need help with CarPlay - Apple Support

If the issue persists, consider answering the following questions.

Does this happen with all contacts?
If not, does it happen with iPhone or non-iPhone users?
Which iOS version are you using?

In the last 2 weeks, my iDrive software was updated to the most current version. This issue happened before that as well.

Just to let you know, I do not have “Do not disturb” activated, or anything that would affect my ability to text while driving.

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately it has happened with 2 Apple users, 2 non-Apple users, and one of each. Today I replied to a group of 2 In an existing message thread from yesterday. No problem with using Siri and CarPlay to continue the thread. However, I deleted the message thread from my Messages app, and then tried to use Siri and CarPlay to start a new message to the same 2 people (both Apple users). I got the message, “Sorry, there was a problem with the app.” A few seconds later I duplicated the attempt and it went through perfectly.

Thanks for letting us know those details. Since the issue has happened since you got the car, the next best step would be to make sure your car stereo firmware is up-to-date. For more info, contact your manufacturer.

Something even more weird has happened since I updated to iOS 14 yesterday. I tried to send a text to 2 people using CarPlay, both iPhone/iMessage users, and Siri said, “Sorry, I can’t do that right now. When you stop driving, you can use your iPhone to finish”.

2 seconds later I was able to send the message using CarPlay. For some reason, it’s always the 1st message that won’t go through.

Also I am using IOS 13.7 but this has happened since I got the car on January 1, 2020 with the prior IOS as well.
