How to sync iTunes10 library to ipod touch?

Try to help a friend sync his iTunes library to an iPod touch.

iTunes is version 10.

Under "File" the option to "Sync iPod" is greyed out.

Is the only option to upgrade to iTunes 12?

Correct. You should always use the latest version of iTunes
