I have HP 27fw monitor (1080p) which I am trying to connect to 27' late 2012 iMac. I am using a thunderbolt to HDMI cable. Everything works fine, except the resolution on 2nd monitor is very poor. Ofcourse t cannot be as good iMac, but the main problem is the resizing of window when I drag them across from the iMac to the 2nd monitor. I have tried various setting combinations no luck. Using Catanlina 10.15.6

Was thinking of suggesting that, but was playing with the idea it shows max res without that.
Yeah’ it looks like a fairly old monitor with VGA and HDMI. I was thinking that it might need to be set at 720p instead of 1080p like an older TV that I once used.
Go to: Apple > System Preferences > Displays > go to the display preference panel for the HP > hold the Alt (option) key > click on the Scaled button and try different Display Resolutions.

...and Apple is the late 2012 with 2 thunderbolt ports ....Will Cable make difference ?
Wrong cable, please use mini displayport to HDMI connection. Same physical connection but different cables.
Full-HD (1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz) is not going to match a 27" iMac of Native Resolution:2560x1440.
