Erasing hard drive taking hours
i am erasing my hard drive so I can install a fresh os.
but it’s been almost 24 hours and it’s STILL going.
Should I force shutdown and start again?

Yes abort the erase since you are not performing the clean install correctly. For a clean install you need to erase the whole physical drive. See this Apple article on how to erase the whole physical drive (You want the first option):

Edit: I suspect you may have a failing drive since it should not take more than a few minutes to erase a volume (maybe a bit more for a very large drive).
