I turned on pip in settings but when i press home button while using youtube it closes app rather then switching to pip

You're probably going to have to pay for YouTube Premium if you want PIP from their app.

Apps have to be updated to support PiP. Google has not done so.

Google may choose to not bring PiP to YouTube. It's not available in Premium.
