Activity GPS issues after watchOS 7 and iOS 14 updates

This morning I upgraded my iPhone XS Max to iOS 14 and my S4 Watch to watchOS 7. I then went for a run, using the Outdoor Run activity on my Watch as usual, holding my iPhone while I ran (as I was listening to a podcast with AirPods). When I finished, everything was recorded as normal, and I could sync the activity to Strava.

Later, I went for a walk. I used the Outdoor Walk activity on my Watch, but this time didn't take my iPhone. When I returned, and attempted to upload the activity to Strava, I received a warning that no GPS/route data was present. I checked the Fitness and Health apps, and sure enough, there was no route on the map - only the starting point.

I spoke to someone at Apple Support and they suggested I turned off/back on a couple of related privacy settings. I have since tried another Outdoor Walk activity, without the phone present, and the problem persists - no GPS/route data.

My wife also tried the same this evening, after upgrading her iPhone X and S4 Watch too. She had the same results - i.e. with just the Watch, no GPS/route information was saved with the activity.

This seems like a bug to me. Has anyone else experienced the same issue, or has any suggestions as to how to fix it?

Well at this point I've got no idea what should be happening.

So I did the beta update to 14.2 and Apple activities started recording gps data again.

Went for a run yesterday and automatically used Strava. Checked today and in the Activity app no gps data.

Even weirder when I 1st opened it the activity showed 700 active and total calories.

Went to another activity and came back and now it's changed to 700 and 769!

Just recorded my first workout with Apple watch workout app after updating watch to 7.0.2, still no good. I did get heartrate data back, but still no route, just the start point. The data did transfer to Strava but was all messed up. Come on Apple! We started using your products because the ease of use, and we never have to deal with issues like this. Back to recording with Strava app, hope this still works.

I did an 'Outdoor Walk' yesterday (As a test. I usually use the Nike Run Club app) and the route was recorded in the Fitness app. Start and finish.

Only had my Apple Watch 5 GPS and Cellular with me, I never bring my phone. I think it is working correctly.

I never checked my routes in the Activity/Fitness app before so don't know if they used to be there.

iOS 14.1 iPhone 11 Pro and Watch OS 7.0.2

I too am having a lot of trouble with missing workout and health data. I upgraded an iPhone 11 Pro and Apple Watch Series 5 to iOS 14 and watchOS 7 and that broke the health and workout sync (data syncing is partial - it misses workouts and the occasional stand hours). I have subsequently upgraded to iOS 14.1 and the problem remained. Today I got my iPhone 12 Pro and set it up as a transfer from the 11. The problem remains.

Had problem ever since iOS 14 and watch is 7. This is a horrible shame and not worthy of Apple. Can’t get a straightforward answer anywhere; only anecdotal try this and try that. This is a tech issue not psychoanalysis. There should be a straight admission of the problem and a straightforward solution. Unpairing NO GPS ROUTES. Resetting phone NO GPS ROUTES. Bought new Apple Watch 6 NO GPS ROUTES. Bought new iPhone 12 STILL NO GPS ROUTE. .

.

.

c’mon man. Apple get your **** fruit together for your faithful users who have spent thousands of dollars and put our faith in you.

After many tests, run and walk I have noticed that the VO2 data’s are not properly recorded when I use a HRM chest belt such as Garmin or Suunto.

However, when I record a workout (walk, or run) with the Workout App only wearing my AW and therefore the wrist HRM, the VO2 is properly recorded.

It is such a shame because before iOS 14 update and watch os 7 update it used to work perfectly even with third part HRM.

I have already written to Apple Feedback to report this bug.

Does anyone else here have noticed the same ?

I did a transfer from my iPhone 11 Pro to my 12 Pro and that didn't fix things. But I didn't do a restore from iCloud. Does anyone know the technical difference between the two?

Also - has anyone tried setting up their phone as a new device? Does that solve the problem? If you do that, do you lose all your Health data? You keep Photos etc. because those are shared over many devices, but Health is only on the phone (and watch), right?

Also - has more than one person had luck with the iOS 14.2 Beta fixing this?

I am experiencing the same issue. The map/route for my exercise was working fine until around early September 2020. I've spent hours trying to fix it, talking to Apple support techs, pairing/repairing but no luck. My fitness map only shows a pin drop of my location (where I started) but no longer shows the colorful map route. Shame as I really only use the watch for the fitness and health purpose.

For what it is worth, unpairing the watch, erasing the phone, restoring the phone from iCloud, and then restoring the watch from iCloud (all as recommended in the Apple support document) did indeed fix this for me.

I was a bit worried since I had transferred my setup from an iPhone 11 Pro to a new 12 Pro first, hoping that would fix things (but it didn't). I thought maybe the iCloud backups of the 12 Pro would have a problem, but no. Restoring the 12 Pro using the most recent iCloud back up worked. It was a non-trivial amount of effort, of course. But it appears to have worked. I think I lost some GPS data and some of the old workouts, but new workouts are behaving correctly.

So we've all had different levels of success with repairing the watch, restoring the phone from the cloud, upgrading to Beta versions.

Has anyone managed to get back the data for their old activities? Heart data for Apple Workouts before July and GPS data for any old activities?

I went the beta route and have new activities from the Workout App all recording gps data. Strava still had no GPS data in the Activity(fitness) App and reinstalling it means it now fails to launch on watchOS 7.1 beta.

But iSmoothRun is recording activities correctly and the maps are visible in the Apple Fitness app, so it is possible.
