Activity GPS issues after watchOS 7 and iOS 14 updates

This morning I upgraded my iPhone XS Max to iOS 14 and my S4 Watch to watchOS 7. I then went for a run, using the Outdoor Run activity on my Watch as usual, holding my iPhone while I ran (as I was listening to a podcast with AirPods). When I finished, everything was recorded as normal, and I could sync the activity to Strava.

Later, I went for a walk. I used the Outdoor Walk activity on my Watch, but this time didn't take my iPhone. When I returned, and attempted to upload the activity to Strava, I received a warning that no GPS/route data was present. I checked the Fitness and Health apps, and sure enough, there was no route on the map - only the starting point.

I spoke to someone at Apple Support and they suggested I turned off/back on a couple of related privacy settings. I have since tried another Outdoor Walk activity, without the phone present, and the problem persists - no GPS/route data.

My wife also tried the same this evening, after upgrading her iPhone X and S4 Watch too. She had the same results - i.e. with just the Watch, no GPS/route information was saved with the activity.

This seems like a bug to me. Has anyone else experienced the same issue, or has any suggestions as to how to fix it?

It also seemed to me, as if turning wifi off on the phone and watch helped. My theory is that the phone doesnt use GPS on an active workout and thus falls back to locating me via nearby wifi SSIDs. This would also explain the extreme rubberbanding of the position indicated in Apple or Google Maps on the phone while a workout is running on the Watch. But some time ago I was pretty sure that I turned Wifi off and still got really low quality of location tracking on a workout....

I think there is something wrong with the phones location API that doesnt want to go into "full power" GPS tracking during a Watch workout so the watch just receives garbage location data...

The only real 100% working workaround is turning on Airplane Mode on the Watch before workouts so it has to use its internal GPS. This has always lead to perfect tracking for me.

Hello.

Yesterday I unpaired and paired again my watch to test a workaround (still have to test it) and then I realized I couldn't unlock both my iMac and MacBook PRO. It worked fine before.

So on my iMac I solved with this workaround (credit to the original poster): https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251803595

Then I was about to do the same stuff on my MacBook, but I realized that if you can "unlock" continuity in some way between the Mac and the watch then the unlock option will turn on without errors. So on my MacBook I didn't follow the instructions posted in that other thread but:

  • I made sure that my watch was connected to the home WiFi (go to preferences -> WiFi; this should be optional)
  • I opened the calendar and my watch
  • to the far left of the bottom bar on your Mac, the calendar icon, with the small watch icon on top, should appear. This proves that your Mac and your watch see each other
  • after that I went to preferences -> privacy and turned on the "unlock with watch" option and this time it worked

So you can try both. I cannot say for sure that on my iMac the "tech" solution of the other thread worked or it was thank the continuity workaround, because I tried both in this same sequence.

Hope it works for you too!

About the map bug on workouts, I really don't like the idea of restoring my whole iPhone and watch (already done on my watch as a first attempt) to make a map appear. I'll gladly wait for Apple to solve it, it's a major bug. Thousands of people in this thread only. You can't make my mother, who is 70, to backup her iPhone, erase and restore it every time there is a weird bug :-)

Same issues here following software upgrade to phone and watch!

Workouts shoing on my watch but not sinking on the app when using the activity option on the phone. However I do get them when using the Strava app.

No heart rate data recording for any workouts and no route information either!

Really frustrating as my watch is on a reward scheme through Vitality Health and not recording these workouts mean i lose my monthly points!

Like everyone else here, my workouts and health app are screwy, calorie counts much lower (resting rates when on charger are comically low, often 5 calories in an hour), and while I can view my steps per month, everything past May for distance is gone from a monthly view but you can see the data in a day.

started with iOS 14, and not watch os 7. On an iPhone XS and Apple Watch 5. iOS 13 was problem free since I got my watch in April.

I am only using apple’s activities and not a 3rd party app.

It's good they have a solution for some people but the fact it's not fixing it for everyone means I'm not trying it.

A good question to ask Apple would be whether we are actively losing data by not performing the fix now?

I'm OK to keep logging data and not seeing it right now if they can confirm it's really there but a bug means I can't see it.

If on the other hand the situation means I'm losing data I won't ever get back then I'd be forced to try their solution.

How is it no reviewer has had this issue? Fairly sure also Tim Cook said on launch day he had just completed an activity prior to the presentation. Don’t these people use the activities app like the rest of us and then review it? My watch app on my phone says I have an aluminium 6, it’s the stainless version, well that’s what I paid for. Apple just get it fixed please!!

No bother:

Good - I run and cycle and the Strava app auto pauses on both (only pauses on a run for Apple app).

Good - Saves the map and ride without needing to import and sync (I used HealthFit as middleware to handle).

Bad - For rides does not show avg speed, for runs you have to tap the screen to switch between current and svg speed

Bad - Difficult to control music and podcasts as not in built with app like Apple Workout meaning having to operate watch screens when running going back and forth between apps

Bad (and worst) - No always on, so screen dims to just Apple time when using meaning you have to raise to show the Strava screen - a bit hairy on a bike

Picky - There are a LOT of orange icon apps on a watch, meaning I often pick the wrong one
