iOS 14 text notification issues

I am not getting sound notifications on text messages nor is the banner showing up on my locked screen. I have an iPhone 11 and just downloaded the latest iOS 14. Have reset my phone twice now. Please advise. Thank you.

I've also been fighting this notification issue for months on my iPhone 11 Pro. Apple no help. I discovered that turning off bluetooth on my phone fixed the problem (allowed text notifications to sound and appear, whether the phone was locked or not). But with bluetooth on, notifications only sounded & appeared with the phone unlocked. Obviously, I didn't want to leave bluetooth off all the time.

I also came to realize this issue started when I got a new Apple Watch 6 a few months ago. Coincidence? Taking the watch on and off didn't help. And with the watch on, it didn't sound notifications either.

But the posting from StubbornPixie got me thinking about killing the mirror function on the watch for the Messages app. So, iPhone Watch app>Messages>"Custom" "Notifications Off" seems to have SOLVED THE PROBLEM for me. My iPhone 11 Pro now notifies me of incoming text messages with bluetooth on. I realize my watch won't ping with messages until Apple fixes the root problem, but at least I won't be missing message notifications altogether.

Hope this helps others.

Hi! I’m not having this issue on my iPhone but a friend of mine does. Since i’m his tech reference (lucky him 😂) I started investigating and no luck with any troubleshooting so.. I decided to reset all the settings of network connections from the configuration menu option

Settings/General/Reset/Reset all network connections

It fixed it partially but at least it’s something

Bear in mind that you will have to re enter all the wifi passwords again I believe

I would suggest calling Apple, escalating it to a senior tech, and insisting they send this issue to the tech team. That involves sending them screenshots of the notifications settings of all the devices involved.

That's what I did, and how I found this thread--my tech sent me here, after I said "I can't be the only one this is happening to."

Do they actually read this? I don't know. But I believe that a flood of tech reports might get things moving.

An update to my post yesterday: BAD NEWS

I noted this morning that changing the Apple Watch app to disable notifications to the Watch has NOT fixed the problem after all. Despite it working well repeatedly yesterday, today it was again malfunctioning whenever bluetooth was turned on. Maddening.

Like so many other fixes that have been reported (e.g. resetting network settings), the fix seems to last only temporarily.

So, back to leaving bluetooth OFF if I want to receive iMessage notifications with my iPhone 11 Pro locked.

One thing I failed to mention, for what it's worth: Although the iMessage notifications fail to wake the phone and sound an alert, when I manually wake the phone, the message is sitting there on the screen. Did I mention "maddening?"

To find out if we all have the same error, you can do this test: In my case I enter WhatsApp Web and after 8-10 minutes it shows me "Teléfono sin conexión (Phone without connection)", that is to say, basically my iPhone disconnects from the internet and that's why it doesn't the notifications of any application that uses the internet work (WhatsApp, iMessage, Instagram, Telegram, etc).

Can you do the tests and confirm if it is the same in your case?

Issue is happening to me too and it appears to be totally random. I have confirmed my notification settings are correct.

I'll have received a text message but it won't wake the lock screen. iPhone 11 screen just stays dark. If I tap the screen to wake it I'll see the notification banner with the timestamp it was delivered at, but because it doesn't wake the screen or buzz, I won't know it's been sitting there.

You can imagine how big an inconvenience this is when you're expecting important messages.

And it's happened when receiving both SMS messages and iMessages. Some contacts will always show notifications, some won't. The ones that won't might work for a few days and then go dark again. As I said, appears to be a totally random bug.

The only fix I've found is to turn off Bluetooth (mind you I've tested it only once, with only one contact). Regardless, that is not a long-term solution.

This happened to me because I set my time forward, while my time was set forward I would get messages that the phone thought was on that date. If you set your time back then you some how cause notifications for anyone you texted “in the future” to be turned off. You need to delete a conversation with someone that you texted “in the future” in order to see their texts. This was my fix, hope this helps.

I'm late weighing in on your comment, deggie, but you're right... and wrong. iOS is designed to defer iPhone notifications to the watch when it's being worn. Great design (when it works). But when you remove the watch, the notifications should default back to the iPhone. That aspect is NOT working.

No one here who isn't suffering this problem should be telling others they're doing something wrong or are misunderstanding the iOS rules. As a veteran writer of software, I can tell you Apple notifications is a very complex design, and Apple is (hopefully) trying to untangle the bugs before the next major release. I don’t think any of us had this problem before Q3'20, and now a ton of us do. I know it's not this simple, but everyone I know with an iPhone and Apple Watch is having the problem. Those without (including my wife) are not having the problem. Turning off iPhone bluetooth solves it for me, but not for everyone. Like I said, it's very complicated software.
