Unable to hotspot to iphone

Following and update of Catalina about 2 weeks ago I was unable to log in to my MacBook Pro 2019 model. I was able to change my password in safe mode (where I found that my original password still worked, just not enough!). Once in I found that all my password/banking keychain data had been erased (had to re-import from iPad), email accounts had been deleted (manual setup required), iCloud links had been disabled (reset), and I was unable to tether to my iPhone when working remotely.

On clicking the WiFi symbol I was always offered a choice of networks or personal hotspots, my iPhone. No option for the phone appears and I have not found any way of resolving this.

Apple have offered me another update just yesterday. I am not happy to download it as my entire work portfolio may disappear into the ether.

Any help on the tether problem greatly appreciated.

And if anyone has had the latest update let me know if it is stable.

Cheers
