No viewfinder when trying to pair Apple watch

I’m setting up a watch, but when instructed to show the viewfinder to the watch, the Watch app on the phone shows a blank screen.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. It appears there are issues setting up the Apple Watch. We'll do what we can to help.


Restart the companion iPhone and try again: Restart your iPhone


If possible, also restart the Apple Watch: How to restart your Apple Watch


If you're still having issues, remove the Watch app for the iPhone and install it again: Delete built-in Apple apps on your iOS 12, iOS 13, or iPadOS device or Apple Watch
