No your files should not be deleted, but you should make sure to have a good backup before upgrading macOS just in case something goes wrong. Just make sure you all your files are located within your user folder(s) and not on the root of the drive since Catalina no longer allows user files to be stored on the root of the drive.

Also you make sure that your third party 32 bit apps are either upgraded to 64 bit versions or uninstall the 32 bit apps before upgrading to Catalina. Catalina no longer supports 32 bit apps.

FYI, you should always have frequent and regular system backups. It is impossible to recover accidentally deleted data from an SSD. Plus an SSD can fail at any time without any warning signs.
