Two step verification on old gen AppleTV

I have read all these posts stating that on old Gen AppleTV, the verification code should be added after the password. I don't see how that works.

1) I open AppleTV

2) I choose a movie

3) It asks me for my password

4) I enter the password

5) ONLY THEN, do I get a verification code sent to my macbook, ipad and iphone.

6) BUT, how can I reenter the password and the code together when the password has already been entered? ATV doesn't reqzest a password or a code, just gives me a black screen.
