Computer crashing after system update to 10.6.4

Hi. I'm on a macbook pro. Everything was wonderful until the update. Now I'm crashing seemingly randomly.

in Mail
in safari
at start up --- never getting past the apple

I just hold the powerbutton to crash it...restart. It works for a while and then crashes again. Would love your advice.

I can't remember exactly when I updated but my day today has been filled with whirling beach balls and s-l-o-w loading apps (Mail, Safari, iPhoto) and now iPhoto on my iPhone seems to be affected. Was your problem a gradual one or all at once? My iMac has been slowing down more and more and now I just swear all the time.

PS--My iMac is only 4 months old.
