IPAD UPDATE & WEAK SECURITY MESSAGE

It turns out that my router is not compatible with the latest iOS 14 update.

A new router required I’m on the phone to my ISP (in a queue) as I type this.

so I’m secure enough but the router isn’t working properly.

It is the router. It’s not compatible with the iOS 14 update.

sorry as I’m on the phone with Virgin Media on hold as I type this. The router is three years old so not up to date with Apple’s latest security system.

I could ignore the message as my security is fine but it effectively weakened my WiFi on my iPhone.

very annoying when I can’t use it upstairs.

Seriously, the ISP-provided Router will never be cutting edge. They are cheap - and are intended to provide the means to connect the subscriber to the ISPs network.

The best approach, by far, is to consider the ISPs router as an “untrusted” box that connects you to the internet - and nothing more. To this you can add an upstream WiFi Router or Access Point that belongs to you - and use this to provide your local network connections and WiFi. You can then ideally disable WiFi on the ISPs Router - or just ignore it.

When you say it isn't the router, do you mean you have verified that your router is already using a modern security protocol? Which one?

Yes! And I’m sick of hearing you need to contact your internet provider to fix when BEFORE this update it was NOT an issue! Everyone in our household is having this issue with their Apple products since the update!

It is possible that your WiFi Router is too old to be (or not capable of being) configured for more secure settings. As such, you can either configure the most secure settings that your Router will support - or replace your Router with something more advanced that provides better security configuration options.

TKIP is old and insecure - and was deprecated many years ago; it should be disabled in deference to much better WiFi security protocols (WPA2 and WPA3).

I have exactly the same problem after the most recent two updates.

I know it isn’t the router as I’ve checked everything.

reset, turned off and on again and followed all advice from my Internet service provider.

Just like yourself I am getting the same warning, ‘security weak’ Can’t seem to get any help from Apple at all which is just making a bad situation worse. 🥺

It isn’t always necessary to update your ISP-provided router. Many find that they have no alternative other than than to use the ISPs provided router/modem.

The easiest (and often best) way to upgrade your home WiFi is to add either a more sophisticated WiFi Access Point (AP) - or a WiFi Router of your choice that is configured in “bridge mode”. There are many from which to choose.

Don’t get too stressed about this. Whilst ensuring that you are always using the strongest security that you can is a good aim - and is strongly recommended - don’t lose sight of the fact your iPad is no less secure today than it was prior to the update to iPadOS14. The alert that you see is just an informational warning that your privacy/security settings could be stronger.

You are 100% correct and I’m on the phone to my ISP (in a queue) now. Virgin Media’s hub is not compatible with the iOS 14 update.

l am asking for a new one if I ever get through? I’m out of contract too so I will change if they don’t sort it?
