I get a lot of internet links, and sometimes, when I click on the link, I get an error message.

Obviously, the email address did not start with "mailto:," which was added by a program.
My only workaround is to make a screenshot and type the addresses by hand. (Copy-and-paste does not work either.) Tedious and so not 2020.
Why does it happen and how to fix?

Safari should be handing that off to Mail (or whatever your default email client is).
It's a standard protocol and Safari does handle it. I don't know why yours is not.
Any Extensions, like Ad blockers? Try turning them off and see what happens.
But, I have no idea what would cause Safari to fail to handle that protocol.

Ordinarily, mailto: addresses are contained within webpage anchors as shown in this mailto URI wiki. Safari 14 will allow you to enter the mailto:foo@bardomain.com in its address field, and then warn you with a dialog:
and clicking Allow, will then open an Apple Mail compose window with the To: field populated with foo@bardomain.com address. I was using a different user and email domain than shown.
Thanks, Barney 15-E and VikingOSX. I do use an ad blocker, a tool of sanity in this ad-ridden internet.
The error message or any parts thereof cannot be copy-and-pasted. The link that originated it cannot be copy-and-pasted either. Therefore, unless I can work around that, I cannot enter anything in the address field that I do not type in, letter by letter.
Disable and remove the ad-blocker and try testing this misbehavior again.
If the problem resolves, you’ll want to check with the folks supporting the ad-blocker app.
