Will a smaller size band 42mm fit on a 44mm case?

Question

I just bought the latest Apple Watch out The Series 6. The silver aluminum case is 44mm

will a stainless steel link band that’s only 42mm fit on it?

from what I’ve gathered it’s the other way around a 44mm band will fit on a 42mm case

is that correct?

Id really like to get that stainless steel 42mm band, if I do will it fit on my 44mm aluminum case?

all apple watchs from the first one to the latest one nike or otherwise share all bands grouped by 38 and 40 share

and 42 and 44 share
