Compass Elevation

I have an iPhone 8+ and the Compass app is reporting inconsistent elevation. Yesterday it was fluctuating between 280 and 500 feet. I haven't changed any settings recently.

Hi Ghentite,

We understand that the Compass app is showing inconsistent elevation, and we'd like to see how we can help.

To help us get a better understanding of the issue, we'd like to ask a few questions.

  1. Which iOS version is your iPhone currently running? Find the software version on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod
  2. Does any other information appear to be inaccurate in the Compass app, or is the issue only with the elevation? More about the Compass app here: Use the compass on iPhone
  3. Do you have a case or a screen protector on your device? If so, does the issue persist when those items are removed?

Thanks!

Ghentite,

Thanks so much for answering those questions for us. Since it sounds like the issue continues to happen when the case is removed from the device, we have a few other things we'd like to check and try to help isolate this further.

Next, would you mind going to Settings > Compass, and let us know if "Use True North" is selected?

If that feature isn't enabled, please also go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services, and let us know if "Compass Calibration" is turned on there. If it's not, does enabling "Compass Calibration" seem to improve the issue at all?

More about viewing and managing location information and settings here: Control the location information you share on iPhone

Thank you!

  1. My iPhone is using iOS 14.0.1.
  2. I don't own a compass to verify if the Compass app heading directions are accurate. Coordinates Google maps provide are close to what the app displays.
  3. I have an Otterbox Statement (HKHU2ZM) protector.

I removed the case this morning and walked around my condo to test it. It predominately stated 120 ft or 130 ft, but occasionally jumped to 430 ft or higher (it never stopped at 420); it occurred while connected to wifi and cellular networks.
