Hi,
I’ve read the orange dot means an app is using the microphone. It appeared when making a phone call. I’ve turned off the microphone for all apps and I don’t have Siri turned on. The orange dot still appears when making a phone call. Does this mean someone is listening to my phone calls?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! Thanks for posting about the new notification that you're seeing when using an app that uses the microphone. We'd be glad to help you out.
You mentioned that you turned off the microphone for all apps in the list in Settings > Privacy > Microphone. One app that you likely won't see in that list is the Phone app, which is what you use when handling normal phone calls on an iPhone, so you're seeing the orange light because the Phone app is using your microphone while you talk on the phone. This is expected.

A light can’t record anything.
Their are two orange dots one above the other that come on when I make a phone call what does this mean

Strange that it never came on before I added app, I removed app but light stays during calls. Thanks anyway..
No, they are not. The purpose of the light is to let you know that an app on the iPhone is using the microphone. When you swipe down to see Control Center it will tell you what app. It will show it is the phone if you are on a phone call and that just shows the microphone is active, not that it is recording anything. Apple does not monitor or record your phone calls.
Interesting. I get that the phone microphone needs to be used in a call where the phone is the mic, however, I just tested with my AirPods (which has its own mic) and the orange dot still shows. This leaves me asking "Why?".
I am not recording your calls. No one on this USER to USER only forum is recording your calls. Apple isn't recording your calls either. It would be quite ILLEGAL for them to do so. And Apple doesn't break the law. If you'd have taken the time to read this thread, you'd have already seen this has been over and over and over.

My Jove, I think you've got it!! And that is All there is to this. There is no nefarious plot to do anything other than tell you your microphone is in use.
If you are using any app that needs to use the microphone and you have granted that access the orange light will come on when you activate the app. Obviously you can't turn it off on phone calls UNLESS you mute the mic when the call connects.
It has noting to do with the orange dot. If the mics work on their own the problem may be with noise reduction, which uses a 2nd mic on the back of the phone. So be sure you don’t have a case covering it. You can also turn off noise reduction and see if that helps.
Instagram and Snapchat have ads that are Oreo rated around the conversation taking place.
Unfortunately, those headlines are far more scary than the presence of a little orange dot.
