For iPhone 7's that have a loose Audio IC not even iOS 25.x is going to fix it. If your speaker is grayed out and all you can do is use BT, as you have described, it is a hardware problem. It is not caused by any update, although doing one can reveal it and your really have 3 options: (a) Pay Apple for an out-of-warranty replacement and get a service replacement unit. I would not go that route at this point when you can buy a new iPhone SE 2020 for less than $100 more, (b) buy some other phone or (c) find a 3rd party repair shop that can do microlevel soldering and have them re-ball the four connection points that are usually at issue, and do ask and make sure they did all four. Prices have been dropping for this option. Keep in mind if you go this route Apple may refuse future service on your iPhone, but that really should not be an issue.

I spoke with an Apple representative. Just because there is a fault in production doesn't mean that causes every issue with the mic. They fully admitted to me there could be some sort of data corruption this update brought out in my phone. It's common knowledge and should be no surprise that programmers focus on ensuring the new hardware works with new software before checking bugs for older hardware. At this point I'll be upgrading because I need a reliable phone.

Me also spent 69€ on repairing the audio chip on my iPhone 7plus after a iOS 14 upgrade. It worked for almost 1 week. After updating to iOS 14.3 beta 3 the chip died immediately after reboot. Also when i do a reboot my WiFi won’t turn on and have to reboot multiple times to get it back. It’s the most terrible upgrade I’ve ever done. I wish I could go back to 13.

In my case what is happening is, the microphone is working while talking on phone (thankfully) but when I try to record a voice memo the microphone does not work. When I try audio calling via messenger, whatsapp, skype the microphone does not work but here is very surprising thing: in speaker mode it is working.

But when I try to send someone a voice message, it does not work.

Though in the new ios 14 update, apple gave a feature that indicates if the app is using microphone (orange dot) or camera (green dot). So while using the apps where microphone is being used the orange dot appears but it does not work.

Weird

I'm having the exact same problem as everyone else: post update to 14.2 no mic for calls, Facetime, WhatsApp calls, voice notes. Also can't hear anyone on calls (and can't it 'ringing' when I try and contact others). But bluetooth headphones work. Spoke to Apple and they suggested I wipe the phone and reinstall from an old backup but it didn't work. Tried hard reset, resetting network settings, none of it working. Got a call with Apple tomorrow but not hopeful they'll fix it...

I work in the mobile phone industry and have been involved in every generation of mobile technology........ This is clearly an ios upgrade software issue and is shocking behaviour from Apple that their own upgrade has broken critical functionality on a phone. Disgraceful that they are not all over fixing this. But then again why would you fix something that will generate a whole load of sales?

OK, I found this video helpful: https://youtu.be/rhDkShFksrQ

This is what just worked to get my sound back on my iPhone 7 with iOS 14.2

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Go down to General
  3. Go down to Reset
  4. Hit Reset All Settings (DO NOT hit Erase All Content and Settings)
  5. You'll probably have to put your Apple Pay info back in, but that's the only adjustment I see. All my data and photos etc are still there.

Hope that helps!

Yes, I know it was. And yes I know there are a variety of world model numbers. Are you saying that only one specific one is having the problem? Which one? Or are you trying to claim there are different versions of iOS 14 for all those models?

And what diagnostics are your referring to? Are you saying that everyone in this thread went to Apple and ran diagnostics and said everything is fine? I've read the entire thread and I didn't see that.

As I said earlier I had a 7 Plus which I handed down and it encountered this issue. It was not during an update. The only microphone that worked was BT and the speakerphone capability was grayed out. It was a loose Audio IC. Ended up trading it in. It isn't too hard to do an internet search and you can find videos about this including demonstrations of reballing the chip and suggesting that 4 connections be done.

If your iPhone does not exhibit the same symptoms then it may be something else. If you have reported it you can wait until an update is released and see if it fixes it or try other remedies. But if no microphones are working and your speakerphone is grayed out it is almost certainly a loose Audio IC. And no software update can fix that.

Same problem here. iPhone 7. 128gb. iOS 14.2.

Their callcenter support told me it was a hardware related issue and that the reparation would cost me 350€. After alot of discussion I was told that i could do an ad-hoc hardware diagnostic at Elgiganten Barkarby, Stockholm, Sweden. The guy in Elgiganten Barkarby didnt want to perform any proper diagnostics but told me that it was probably hardware, because that's what apple is saying about this issue. I really dont wanna have to jailbreak the device to revert back to iOS 13 as it's a security-risk, but it's either that or throwing my current phone in the bin.

I had a new audio drive installed in a UK High Street mobile repair shop with 12 month guarantee if it doesn’t work. Cost £100. First time it didn’t solve the audio issue with phone calls. Sent it back and now it is fully working again. Cheaper than the Apple support option of £350. Hopefully I’ll get a few more years use from the phone. Hope that helps.

Same problem here..I've lost both the microphone and the camera after the update to iOS 14.

The camera recovered after some resets and hard-resets.

The microphone never recovered and during a call the audio cannot be transmitted nor be heard.

I've already lost a Mac book pro during an update procedure and now making new updates is getting frustrating.

Please fix this issue!
