Have a 256GB iPhone X, which has about 25GB of photos on the camera roll, all either taken on the phone or imported using airdrop. Have 50GB of iCloud storage, however when you run an iCloud backup the photos don't appear to be backing up? In fact not a lot seems to be backing up as the usage is shown to be only 1GB ? Any ideas on how to fix this

If you are syncing your photos using iCloud Photos, your photos are not included in a backup.
Check settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos > iCloud Photos. Is this set to ON (green)?
