I never set up a passcode (after reset) for my 90 year old aunt because she can't remember it. Just did the ios 14.1 update. Keeps asking for passcode. Help! She can't unlock her ipad

I have the same situation! Here's what you do: comply with Apple's dictatorial demands (since you have to) & setup any password. After they finish with the rest of their nonsense & let you start using your iPad again, go straight to Settings. Scroll down to find "Touch ID & Passcode" (or Face ID or whatever yours says) and select that section. Near the bottom of the options on the right side, is "Turn Passcode Off" -- this will require your newly-created passcode (twice) as well as your Apple ID password. Then you can finally get free of Apple's oppression..

Whilst you might not remember setting a Passcode, the iPad clearly has one that was was previously inactive.

If your iPad is disabled, or you have forgotten your iPad passcode, you’ll need to follow this process:

If you’ve forgotten the passcode on your iPad, or your iPad is disabled – Apple Support

You’ll need access to either a PC (with iTunes installed) or a Mac (with iTunes or Finder - as appropriate for the installed version of MacOS). At this point, use of a computer to restore the iPad is unavoidable.

You’ll also need your AppleID and associated password. If these have also been forgotten, they can be recovered here:

https://iforgot.apple.com

To recover your credentials, you’ll need access to one of the following:

  • Your primary email address mailbox that corresponds with your AppleID
  • Any of the secondary/recovery email addresses that should be configured for your AppleID account
  • Any of the trusted telephone numbers (fixed line or Cellular/Mobile) that are associated with your AppleID

Unless you AppleID account has not been fully/correctly configured, or has been seriously neglected, recovery of the AppleID and password should not be difficult.

More information about recovery of your AppleID:

If you forgot your Apple ID - Apple Support

When you recover access to your credentials, you would be well advised to log-in to your AppleID account from a web browser - and verify/update any email addresses and trusted telephone numbers:

I have the same problem with my aunt's iPad (who is also 90...no joke).

This has happened repeatedly. In her case, I get the message "Enter Passcode...Touch ID requires your passcode when iPad restarts". This happens after an automatic update and restart.

We have never set a Passcode nor have we set up TouchId. I am technically proficient and very sure of this. I drove a half hour to her place only to have the iPad lock up for an hour the first time I touched it. Very frustrating. Fairly sure it's a bug. And why not use a two-factor authentication rather than lock it for hours or days???

The detailed response is appreciated but you are incorrect. The iPad doesn’t “clearly have a passcode.” You are making an assumption which doesn’t reflect the issue being described. The issue is exactly as the original post indicated. If you have an iPad on which you have specifically chosen not to set up a passcode or have turned the passcode feature off (as we do on our iPad so anyone can use it), when apple pushes an update out, the next time you try to open the iPad it goes to the “set up your iPad” screen where it forces you to “create a passcode.” Please note this is not “enter your passcode.” It is specifically requiring you to create a new passcode as if you were setting one for the first time. It would appear that the update is specifically turning the passcode setting on where it was previously turned off.

The only solution I’ve found as another commenter noted is to set a passcode, then go into settings and turn the passcode feature off again. Which is frustrating because it requires you to enter the newly made passcode twice and use your Apple ID password. I have had to do this on two separate updates. It’s frustrating because there is no option to skip this setup window so if one of the kids decides to set a random passcode to get into the iPad, we have to restore the iPad in order to unlock it again.
