problem security update 2020-05 mojave

I applied the 2020-05 Security Update today to my MacBook Pro running Mojave (10.14.6) and after it restarted, I started experiencing problems. The first and most obvious is the Dock crashes repeatedly. I have also noticed that when running applications, the menu bar does not display the app's menus, but stays showing Finder menus. I downloaded the .dmg file with the updater on it and applied it again, thinking perhaps something went amiss the first time, but it did not resolve the issue.

I tried changing the Dock's behavior through System Preferences (auto-hide on/off) with no effect. The Dock will not stay running, and restarting the Mac doesn't make a difference.

I looked into the /Library and ~/Library folders for preferences and settings that might make a difference, but couldn't not identify any specific file to target.

Anyone else had this problem?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.14

Reinstall the OS if this doesn't fix it...

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

Same here. My iMac was running perfectly fine and now it's beyond slow. Safari won't open from the dock so I open from Applications. It takes ages to open.  Even task manager takes forever to close an app.

I checked the forum on macrumors.com and we are not alone. The macrumors.com folk have come up with some solutions but I'm not a computer geek so reluctant to try. Will now wait for Apple to admit the issue and come up with a fix which no doubt will take forever to update on our sloth computers.

I've spent hours trying to use my mac.

Just venting my frustration and the wasted time trying to find out what the problem was with my Mac.

Please Apple do something now. .

Today I also performed the 2020-05 security update in order to be on the safe side with my Apple computer.

When I fired up the iMac 2017 Retina 21" the little red dot above the gear offered my the upgrade to macOS Catalina (NOPE!) or the 2020-05 security update. Okay - let's do the update! It took about 1.6 GB of data and the setup routine took place.

After a few minutes the mouse pointer appeard on a totally black screen. Two minutes later every object on the typical desktop showed up - one by one graphical object and veeeeeryyyy slooooooowlyyy - as if the cpu has been replace by relais driven calculator of the mid 1940ies.

I started Safari which made the icon in the dock bouncing about nearly one minute without showing up the browser itself.

After one and a half minute the browser showed up saying that there was no internet connection.

Well - it was! I've been using my pc, my smartphone and my son performed a download on his playstation.

So there were and are no problems concerning the internet.

Oh, sure! I know what you want me to do: "Please restart the Mac, wait and try again."

Well - I did! Three times. Each time I shut down the Mac an restarted it.

I waited about several minutes but the story remains the same:

The security update 2020-05 damaged the operating system by slowing it down to uselessness.

Question: when will I receive an update for that update?

While having bought an Apple iMac back in 2019 a long time passed by since those days with my Apple II and my Macintosh Quadra / Performa in the 80ies and 90ies. Not only the Apple logo changed but the quality of the operation system does not seem to be far away from Microsoft.

I am totally disappointed since I have been trying to use macOS Catalina which also failed in so many ways.

Now even Mojave is about to be reduced to a worthless operating system by a - so-called "security update".

I need to write this on my - ramshackle Windows-pc - because the Mac is out of order.

Two thumbs down from Germany!

Thank you for trying to help and support us. I really mean it!

I did start the iMac holding down the shift key. It took about two minutes and I had to login.

First thing I was trying to do is starting Safari.

It took exactly the same time as before in my post. Now my iMac is completely useless!

If Apple does not respond to issue an update for that update, once again I will have to

waste my time by reinstalling Mojave.

What a pity!

I just read an article that Apple removed the "ignore" option via the terminal as from update 2020-003. This option removed the annoying red update dot, signaling an Mac OS update for the next release. But this is not possible anymore possibly because Apple wants you to direct you to the latest software version.

This bug in the latest security update directed even more people to Catalina. NOT ME!!!

After first booting into Safe mode, the problem was not fixed, so I then booted into Recover Mode (by pressing Command-R as soon as the logo appears on the screen) and performed an OS re-install. This solved the problem.

As I understand it, this does not include the latest security update, but I do not auto-update my system, so I'll be wary the next time I receive an update notice.

The entire process took maybe 30 minutes, and when my Mac restarted, all my data was intact, as were my preferences. Whew!

The only problem is, that this solution takes you back to an old security update. In my case the security update 2019-005. So, that's a year old security update.

It solves the problem for now, but I'm not comfortable with a build from a year ago.

Still finding out how I can upgrade to security update 2020-004. Maybe someone can help...

I know one thing for sure, I won't update again unless I am certain there are no bugs...

I upgraded to security update 2020-05 and my reasonably fast system turned into a slow mess. Click on a menu - spinning beach ball, go to to open a folder spinning ball, try to reach for a file - you got it spinning beach ball, even safe boot up took so long I gave up on it. I had to use Time machine to revert to the last version before this security update and everything is now fine.

IIRC several systems back we had a security update that was so bad that it had to be removed. My advice to everyone is, until we get more information, avoid this security update - it is just not worth it.

Well - I did. The typical solutions they proposed which can also be found in the internet didn't work. So I have been threatened to reinstall Mojave. When the iMac came back to live again everything worked like a charm. The boyfriend of my daughter tried to do me a favour and afterwards he wrote something on the iMac he started again the security update 2020-05 without asking me.

Guess what happened? Yes - the iMac returned into a state of uselessness and became a worthless piece of non working hardware.

Any more questions?

I also reinstalled Mojave Command + R and it worked perfectly although it took more than 1 hour.

Now back to normal operations.

When is Apple going to issue both an apology and clear instructions for those of us who are not computer techs and who were just left stranded, frustrated and despairing.

Yes, I did the same thing late this morning. And it worked for me. I have not decided when to reinstall the security patch and the new safari. Someone else said the order of those two installs is critical. Only One way works, the other way breaks.

Hours of wasted time due to Apple.

Apple seems to follow macrumors.com's forum and they supposedly took down the original update and replaced it with a new one along with a supplimental for safari 14 update. They kind of snuck it in there without admitting the problems with original updates. I guess with Covid, the manpower to test before releases must have been sacrificed to reduce costs. Now one must take any updates with a grain of salt.
