I was excited to discover custom alerts in Calendar, especially the ability to open an application at a scheduled time. The first time I created a custom alert it worked great—and it's never worked since. It seems they won't save: after I hit "apply" the scheduled event doesn't show any alert. Any advice?

Since it's working in another user account, check to see if any login items could be preventing that on your main account. Open items automatically when you log in on Mac, shows how to check that information.

What are you clicking on to exit the calendar event window after saving the customer alerts? Does this happen if you user another Administrator user on the Mac? You can Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac and test with an administrator user.

You're on to something, Sterling! Not only do the custom alerts do work when I try them in another Admin user account, I've also noticed that they work in my usual account with iCloud-based and Outlook-based calendars—but not with my Gmail-based calendar. What does that indicate to you?
Yes, I'm following those steps. But the custom alerts don't save after I've closed the calendar event window.
