HomePod as iMac speaker?

Can a Home Pod be used as a general wireless speaker for an iMac?

I am trying to decide if I could buy one and use it to replace my super old speakers that have wires everywhere, but it is oddly difficult to get a straight answer on this one seemingly simple question. (Maybe not as simple as I think?)

I know I can use airplay to stream iTunes music, etc. But would it function as a general speaker for the computer?
