How do I mirror my MacBook Pro on a smart TV (Samsung), short of purchasing an Apple TV 4K.

Native mirroring is done using airplay so you would need a TV that supports that (see below) in order to do it without a streaming device like Apple TV. Roku's will be getting support soon however, so if you own one of their recent devices that will be an option. Otherwise, you would need an Apple TV or need to see about using something directly on your Smart TV that facilitates mirroring.
