Mid 2010 Mac Pro: How do you make both Ethernet Ports (that are hardwired) have accessibility so either port shows up as good under Network in System Prefs
It's not so much a question but a post to help someone else. (for this example I am using ethernet port #1 & #2 compared to if you looked at system prefs and system info they label it as ethernet #0 & #1)
I noticed that when I used my hardwired ethernet and plugged it into my ethernet port #1 that I would get an ethernet connection, but if I plugged that same cable into my ethernet port #2, I would get no signal and would only be able to connect with wifi.
I thought maybe my ethernet port #2 was bad but it was not.
Here is the fix on how to accomplish accessibility to both ethernet ports #1 & #2.
Plug your ethernet cable into the ethernet port #1 slot...(see figure below)
1) Open up System Prefs, and click on Network.
(you might have to UNLOCK depending of OS you are using)
2) Then whatever "Ethernet" items that you have in the list just delete (-) (click on minus) them and hit apply ( bottom right) So now you will just have Wifi, Bluetooth PAN etc left on the list.
3) Then click the (+) button to add and on the window that pops up, under "interface" then scroll down to "Ethernet 1" (See figure below)
You will now see the "Ethernet 1" now listed in the left column but it will have a RED DOT next to it. Just click APPLY (bottom right) and you will now see that the "Ethernet 1" has a GREEN DOT next to it. Just test the connection and see if a web page opens.
4) Now REMOVE the ETHERNET CABLE out of Port "Ethernet #1" and plug it into Port "Ethernet #2 .
5) After you plug back in ETHERNET CABLE into "Ethernet #2" go back to Network and you will see that the "Ethernet 1" now has a RED DOT next to it again...(which it should because we are hardwired into the #2 port)
6) Click on (+) to add the second ethernet connection. After clicking on (+) then click on "interface" again and this time scroll down and choose "Ethernet 2".
7) After clicking on Ethernet 2, you should now see that in the left column with a RED DOT next to it. (See figure below)
8) Again Click on APPLY and you will see that the "Ethernet 2" now has a GREEN DOT next to it and just test your internet and open a web page
9) Now REMOVE the ETHERNET CABLE out of Port "Ethernet #2" and plug it into Port "Ethernet #1" again .
Once you do that then you will see that it automatically will switch back and forth between both ports and you can now utilize both ports. Hope this helped someone!
