iPhone suddenly using 4 GB of data in one day during the night!

This past month I suddenly was charged overage on my iPhone data. Never have I ever exceeded. When I looked it up on my account today, it was all used in one day and much of that at an hour when I'm asleep and not using the phone. You can see from the attached usage chart that it was waaaaayyyyy over the normal. What made the phone do this?

iPhone XR, iOS 14

Greetings, DawnGraphics.

It appears that your iPhone suddenly shows that 4 GB of cellular data was used during the night, and we're glad to help with this.

Check the cellular data usage on your iPhone and iPad - Apple Support -- Since your usage chart didn't post, all we can suggest at this point is to review the information in this support article. Also review the information under "Get help".

If you're not finding anything useful, please reply back with the answers to the following questions:

  • Which application(s) used the most data?
  • When you sleep at night, do you keep your iPhone plugged into power?
  • Which model of iPhone are you using, and which iOS is it currently on?

Let us know how that goes.

Take care.

Thank you for getting back to us with that information, DawnGraphics. It's helpful. We have some suggestions for you to keep you from going over your data limit.

How to force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support -- Before you retire, make sure all of your applications are closed.

Update apps or use automatic downloads - Apple Support -- Make sure that you're not automatically downloading applications that have updates available. You'll find this setting under Settings > [your name] > iTunes & App Store.

Turn on Sync Library with Apple Music - Apple Support -- If you subscribe to Apple Music, go to Settings > Music to see if you have Cellular Data turned on. This feature is best used when you're not connected with Wi-Fi and can keep your data usage lower.

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support -- You can also connect your iPhone into power. This will keep your iPhone connected with your Wi-Fi network and won't use data instead. This is why this is a required step to update your iPhone overnight.

Check the cellular data usage on your iPhone and iPad - Apple Support -- We also recommend resetting your data usage at the end of your billing cycle to keep a good track of what's currently being used.

Feel free to get back to us with any questions or problems you may have.

Take care.
