"Safe Mode" performs some cursory startup disk diagnostics, and if necessary, repairs. If it's taking a very long time, it's an indication that startup disk has suffered some degree of corruption.
Let it finish. It might take a long time. If and when it eventually finishes, be sure your Time Machine backup is up to date.
It's difficult to diagnose an inoperative keyboard without the ability to substitute another one known to work. You can use any USB keyboard.
Thank you so much for this response. It looks like it has finished loading but it’s just hanging there now with the Apple logo and the filled-in “bar” beneath it. Should I still leave it alone or try to start again?
Another family member who knows about Macs Thanks the reason I can’t type info in login fields Is that keyboard is not working. I also have only approximately 700 MB space left. This all started happening after installing Google Chrome. Any thoughts are deeply appreciated

If you have a rotating magnetic drive, that symptoms supports the idea that John Galt suggested -- that your drive may have some Bad Blocks.
The worst case for one Bad Block (if it comes clean on the 999th re-try), is that it adds about a quarter minute for each Bad Block.
When a drive goes bad, a common way for it to go bad is to have the number of Bad Blocks suddenly get very large.
