iPad Pro 2020 and External Memory

I have purchased an iPad Pro 2020 to read read tons pdf files from an external hard drive. But, it has been very frustrating process. Instead of making the process easier, I have returned to the laptop as I used to do before. The iCloud is not an option, it is an entire library of documents and books from my job.

Does any one have a tip and/or recommendation in terms of who to better use the iPad to read pdf files directly from an external memory. I will appreciate any help with this.

If you haven't checked out Connect external devices or servers with Files on iPad this is a great place to start, to make sure the process you're using is accurate.
