Font Book pref is set at "Computer" for universal availability. I'm still limited to only a few fonts.

I think this has fixed it! I hasten to add, however, that I've been fooled many times before. Still ...

I'm not sure if you are an "app guy" or if you're a "font guy," so I'll risk asking anyway.

Are Post Script Type II fonts compatible with modern Macs?

Ok, so here are my marching orders to clear up this problem:

Install Mojave in Safe Mode, but not using Firefox... (I plan to use a thumb drive with Mojave installer on it)

Are there any pitfalls I should worry about? When I'm done reinstalling Mojave, do you expect my font troubles to go away?

(I will wait for your reply to this before exploding this new bomb.) Thanks!

I presume you mean Type 1 (there isn't a Type 2).

They are, to a point. In order for them to work at all, they must be placed in the Fonts folder of your user account. For users of Font Book, this is where all newly added third party fonts go anyway, so you don't need to pay much attention to that part.

Office 365 is slightly fussy. As always with Office, you must shut any of its apps down and relaunch them before any newly activated fonts will appear. Word may not initially show T1 PS fonts you've activated. If not, shut it down again, wait 10 seconds or so and try again.

Long term on T1 PS fonts is there is no long term. Adobe announced some months ago that Type 1 fonts will be entirely discontinued in 2021. They will not sell them anymore, and the next major CC release will not allow you to use them. They simply won't appear in the font lists. Expect just about everyone else to follow.

Thanks to all involved with guiding me to the correct answer! I have been retired a while from the DTP game, and recently stumbled across a CD containing a few dozen Type 1 PS fonts. Made me wonder if they could still be used. Kurt's answer suggests time is running out.

I also searched for "free" fonts for personal use and found at least as many available there, too. For now, when I need a font on the fly, I'll just see what's offered online. If I must I'll load my own sets and see how that works out.

Thank you, guys, for responding so quickly! 'ppreciate it!
