Airdrop speed differences

When transferring between my two Macs, I get vastly different speeds depending on which one is sending the files. I have a Mac Pro (Mac A) and a 2019 MacBook Pro (Mac B).

When I transfer from Mac B to Mac A - no issues, fast speed

When I transfer from Mac A to Mac B - nearly unusable for larger files, noticeable difference in speed

I've tested this with the same set of files both ways. Any ideas why there would be such a discrepancy between the two only based on which way the files were going?

Mac Pro, macOS 10.15

Security and privacy

AirDrop uses TLS encryption over a direct Apple-created peer-to-peer Wi-Fi connection for transferring files.[13] The Wi-Fi radios of the source and target devices communicate directly without using an Internet connection or Wi-Fi Access Point.[13]

In my opinion, you are likely seeing the effects of the Mac Pro taking longer to set up its Ad-hoc Wi-Fi network, or reluctance to use advanced Wi-FI sending such as multiple antennas to produce really fast speeds. The Mac Pro 2013 models the oldest Mac Pro that can offer this support at all -- previous Mac Pro can't do it. Along with Handoff and similar services, initial negotiation appears to require Bluetooth LE 4.0, which just appeared on that Mac, and my be somehow inferior in its first implementation there.

That said, if you are genuinely concerned about transfer speeds in this situation, you should use File Sharing, and if those speeds are still not adequate, get off Wi-Fi and onto Ethernet for better speeds and less interference from other devices in you Network Neighborhood.

Thanks Grant. I think that all sounds legit and the Macs age was the first thing I thought might be the issue. Started thinking just like upload download speeds don't match up, that might be compounding the issue. Something does seem to make the problem worse over an extended period. Noticed yesterday after a restart that doing a 374MB test both ways, clocked out to a few seconds different between the two and a 3.2GB test both ways had only about a 19 second difference. I know I've seen where like a 1.7GB transfer from Mac Pro to MacBook Pro would basically not even move, almost fully locked up and would just cancel the Airdrop and transfer via plugged in drive. Freshly restarted Mac seems to keep it as best as it can be till office upgrades my Mac Pro! Thanks for your information Grant!
