USB C to USB adapter not working

I purchased an iPad Pro and needed to connect it to my Mac to transfer the data from my old iPad through iTunes. To accomplish this I purchased a USB C to USB adapter but the Mac would not recognize that the device was attached. I tried all the methods apple provided to help the Mac recognize the iPad Pro but no luck. Eventually I used iCloud to transfer the data. Later I tried connecting the iPad Pro to a standard charging block using the USB C to USB adapter but it would not charge the iPad Pro. Do I have a dud or am I just not understanding the purpose of the USB C to USB adapter.
