Safari has started always opening windows way too large for my screen

Hello

I have long used my MacBook with external displays, one at home, another at work, and sometimes solo, with no external display. For a long time this was no problem, as it detected screen size and opened new windows sized accordingly. But lately, every time I open Safari, regardless of with an external display or not, and regardless of whether I have shutdown and restarted or not, it ALWAYS opens new windows that are way, way too large for whatever screen I am using.

This has become very annoying, and time consuming as I am constantly resizing windows from beyond the confines of my screen.

Any ideas what causes this, and how to fix it?

Thank you

MacBook, macOS 10.15

Hello PeterR,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're having an issue with the window size for Safari. It sounds as though your default size may have changed. Have you tried to force close Safari, and when reopening holding the shift key? Once it's up, try adjusting the size how you want it, open a new window to see if it matches, and then choose Safari > Quit Safari. When you open it up again, it should open the same size as when you closed it.

You can also look at changing the preferences in Safari. This is covered in article, Change General preferences in Safari on Mac.
