Can't get rid of menu bar item

I have a lot of menu bar items: Date, volume, wifi and I used to have multiple language keyboards. I no longer need to have the multiple language, so I wanted to get rid of the 'input' menu item, so I went to the keyboard pane of system preferences and unchecked the "show Input menu in menu bar". So instead of getting a nice little American flag for US English, I now have the "Show emoji and symbols" item (square with the command symbol) in the menu bar, which is not what I want. I do not know how to get rid of it. I do not see any options to uncheck to get rid of that.

Now that I have tried, I also could not make the little flag go away... until I tried this:

Command-drag the flag out of the menu bar

and... poof! it goes up in smoke 😀
