Locked padlock

What can you when your iMac gives you a locked padlock, which I am told is when it uses a firmware password

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.15

you click on the padlock and a popup will open asking for your password. you put in your admin password. the lock will unlock. then you will be able to make changes to that part of the system.
