Change text message alert sound

hello.

I just bought an iPhone 4, and I'm trying to figure out how to change the text message alert sound on it. It seems everyone at work has the same one no matter which one i pick, so when someone gets a text at least 2 people are reaching for their cells. heh.

anyway, i guess i'm pretty dense but i just can't seem to figure it out.

Go to Settings>Sounds>New Text Message.

ah yes, i should have been more precise. there's only the built in sounds there, I would like to use a unique sound that I can upload from itunes or something.

That's correct.

You can assign custom ring-tones but not custom text-tones.

I see, thanks matt. But oh wow, you're telling me I bought the most cutting-edge smartphone in the world and i cannot customize the text message sound?

Some of the finest cars in the world do not have cup holders. Does this diminish the car?

Yes. This would diminish the car greatly. It would be one thing if they didn't include the ability to custom text message sound alerts because it slowed performance, as the extra weight of a cup holder could conceivably do to a high end sports car.

Or even if they included more than six.

Yes I totally agree!!Glaring oversight not being able to change a text message alert unless you jailbreak the phone! I still have my "end of life" iphone 3g and was amazed they didnt include such a simple customization. I thought surely they will address such a fundamental issue with the 3gs and now the iphone 4! But NO!! so might not bother upgrading so soon, talk about drop the ball!! I left feedback on more than one occassion BEFORE iphone 3gs even came out so it just proves they DON'T read the feedback or just don't bother to address the matter. That is a deal breaker for me the supplied text alerts are dreadful I have to keep my text alerts on silent. I am a longtime Apple supporter but have become rather disappointed with Apple lately even though I think they are an awesome innovators, I just wish they would listen to the end user more often!

I agree. Love Apple and its products, but there is a Grandpa Simpson ringtone that I would love to assign to my text messages. Pretty Please, Apple.

Really?

My point was that you can dislike a feature of a product, but still enjoy the product.

You may leave feedback for Apple. they read the comments on the feedback link.

I would like ringtones for texts as well, but it certainly is no big deal for me either way.
