Photo numbering has jumped twice

Why would iPhone photo frame numbers jump from IMG-2029.HEIC to 5444, then then a few days later jump from 5447 to 9528 all within a one week span

Frame numbers aren't visible until they are imported into Photos.

Was incrementing regularly from 1510 in January then jumping almost 7500 frame numbers seems really odd.

Never seen this happening on any previous iPhones. Can't find any pref that would even allow me to set numbers

I think I may have solved the problem

Normally I have used Image capture (Apple) to move photos from iPhone to to Photos in finder. I have been using Air Drop since I didn't have to have the phone plugged in to transfer pictures.

However today I first downloaded 3 pictures taken within the same minute via Air Drop, then did the same with Image Capture.

To my surprise the pictures with Air Drop were numbered 1030, 5947, and 6698 while those with Image Capture were numbered 2094, 2094, 2098 (as they should be).

Apparently Air Drop randomly renumbers the frame numbers so might might not conflict with the recipients own photos. I will not be using Air Drop in the future, unless I renumber the photos in the Get Info of Photos.

Thanks for the question about the apps

Frame numbers aren't visible until they are imported into Photos.

You can see the frame numbers on your iPhone, if you install a third party EXIF viewer.

For example Metapho can be used as a photo extension for Photos on the the iPhone.

With Metapho installed, you can open the Share menu for Photos, add Metapho to the extensions, then view all kinds of exif data. It will even show you, if a photo has been recorded with Deep Fusion or in Night Mode.

For example: After opening Metapho I emceeing the filename with the Image number right on top of the image, also the resolution and other metadata.

There are other useful exif viewers as well - ViewExif, Inspector, and others.

Thanks, but my question was about the picture numbers jumping. It was seeing the img # in Photos that told me there was something wrong.

After the last jump occurred it showed me that two pictures taken only seconds apart had a difference of 4081 frame #'s.

This is the first time in 8 years of having an iPhone this has happened!
