Activity not showing correctly

Why does 40 minute open water swim only shows 9 minutes of exercise??

Or a 45 minute pool swim only show 4 minutes of exercise?

Am I missing something???

Calibrate your Apple Watch, but water might prevent a heart-rate measurement. Exercise rings are filled when your heart rate is above a threshold.

Could this be part of the problem? I thought I had updated it last week with the other Apple mobile device updates. Thanks, Alice
