I'm running Disk Utility on external LaCie 4GB.
Is disk utility working? it's been stuck on "checking catalog hierarchy" for about an hour. Took about 45 min to get to this point.

Running Disk Utility First Aid on that 4 TB LaCie will take a LONG time, so this will be a test of your patience. Just let it run and go do other things.

it's taking forever, but it's progressing ... I was thinking it was stuck.
A bad drive will be like quicksand for Disk Utility First Aid. Good that you got it sorted with a new drive.
UPDATE: this went on for hours, eventually Disk First Aid reported that it couldn't be repaired. New drive in place, all good now.
